Over the last 20 years social media has boomed in popularity. With over 3.6 billion social media users in the world, it’s rare to come by someone who doesn’t have at least one social media app and use it daily. On average people spend over 2 hours on social media a day, but among teenagers the average is 9 hours. Many people over the recent years have argued the effects of social media on our well-being, especially teenagers. While there are many downsides of social media, there are also many upsides to it.
Pro: You can learn about new cultures. On social media you are exposed to different cultures that you may have never known about. In the past, people have been stuck to seeing the cultures that are around them. But with social media, it’s easier than ever to immerse yourself into different cultures.
Con: It’s Lacks Emotional Connection- When people are on social media they tend to hide their feelings from the real life and express their feeling over social media
Pro: It gives people a platform to express their creativity and share their artwork with the world. It’s cool because your artwork doesn’t have to be displayed in a fancy museum to be seen by the world.
Con: It Gives people a license to be hurtful- A good amount of people use social media to bully, mostly affected by kids.
Pro: It makes people feel less isolated. Some people may not have friends at school or be bullied and find comfort in the internet. There have been hundreds of friendships formed online.
Con: It Decreases Face-to-Face Communication Skills- “Computer reliance could hurt a person’s ability to have face-to-face conversation by making it awkward and unusual to hear something and respond with a thoughtful message through the spoken word because of one’s dependence on keyboard to convey a message.
